December Weekend Trip Recommendations
Zermatt, Switzerland
Nestled at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn, the village of Zermatt sparkles with festive charm—twinkling lights, cozy chalets, and snow-covered streets set the scene for a magical holiday escape. Whether you're hitting the world-class ski slopes, riding the Gornergrat Railway for panoramic alpine views, or simply sipping mulled wine at a Christmas market, Zermatt in December is pure winter wonder. Note that it can be a little tough to get to due to its remote location, but there are also other great mountain towns in the Alps to check out if you’re looking for a similar trip!
Strasbourg, France
A weekend trip to Strasbourg in December feels like stepping into a real-life snow globe. Often called the “Capital of Christmas,” this charming town pulls out all the stops with twinkling lights, festive window displays, and one of the oldest and most enchanting Christmas markets in Europe. Wander through the storybook streets of the Old Town, sip hot mulled wine beneath the towering cathedral, and snack on fresh pretzels and spiced cookies as you explore cozy market stalls. With its blend of French and German influences, Strasbourg is the perfect mix of magical and cultural—ideal for a weekend getaway that feels straight out of a holiday movie.
Prague, Czech Republic
Prague in December transforms into a winter wonderland, with its cobblestone streets and historic architecture dusted in snow. The city feels enchanting as you stroll along the Vltava River, where the chilly air and festive lights make the atmosphere feel magical. Exploring iconic landmarks like Prague Castle, Charles Bridge, and the Old Town Square is even more captivating when set against the backdrop of winter. There are tons of wonderful Christmas markets to explore, as well as unique nightlife that offers great fun. Prague is also conveniently very walkable and affordable.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest was my final hurrah of my semester abroad, and I am beyond glad I made it. The Christmas markets at Vörösmarty Square and St. Stephen's Basilica are a must-see, offering handmade gifts, mulled wine, and delicious Hungarian treats. However, the real stars of the show are the incredible thermal baths and the unique ruin bars. We paired an evening river cruise past the stunning Parliament building with a night out at the ruin bars and had a blast! Keep in mind, Budapest is probably the most cost-friendly city on this list- I was able to find a hostel for only 9 euros a night!!
